Our learnsheets have always been about words: fruit, animals, the supermarket, the classroom. Words are where every language starts. But at some point a learner wants to say something, and that takes sentences. That is why we built Conversations, a new way to practise real sentences online, straight in your browser.
What Conversations is
Conversations is interactive sentence practice in English, Dutch, Spanish, French and German. You pick a language, a level and a topic, and you work through the sentences you would actually need in that situation. Ordering food. Checking into a hotel. Explaining to a doctor what hurts. Small talk with a neighbour about the weather.
Every answer gets instant feedback. When you get something wrong, you see the correct sentence right away, so the mistake turns into something you learn from instead of something you repeat.
40 topics in five categories
We grouped the topics into five categories of eight, so it is easy to find what fits your life right now:
- Daily life: the restaurant, shopping, cooking, your morning routine, neighbours.
- Travel: the airport, public transport, the hotel, renting a car, sightseeing.
- Work and study: job interviews, meetings, phone calls, the bank, remote work.
- Social and leisure: catching up with friends, dating, sport, planning an event.
- Practical: the doctor and pharmacy, moving house, home repairs, emergencies.
Want to know how we chose them? We wrote about that in 40 topics, 5 languages: how we chose what to teach.
Three levels per topic
Every topic comes at three levels: beginner (A1), intermediate (A2/B1) and advanced (B2/C1). At the restaurant, a beginner learns to ask for the menu. An advanced learner complains politely that the soup is cold and asks for something else. Same situation, very different sentences, so you can stay with a topic as your level grows.
Six exercises, from easy to hard
Each topic starts with a study view where you read the example sentences, with pronunciation if you want it. When you feel ready, you switch to practice. The six exercises build on each other:
- Word order: put the scrambled words in the right order.
- Fill the gap: choose the missing word.
- Translate: pick the correct translation out of three.
- Spot the error: decide whether a sentence is correct or contains a mistake.
- Pick the phrase: read a line from a conversation and choose what comes next.
- Write it: translate the sentence and type it out in full.
The first exercises help you recognise the right sentence. The last ones ask you to produce it yourself. That shift from recognising to producing is what makes sentences stick. We explain why in From words to sentences.
How it fits with the learnsheets
Conversations does not replace the learnsheets. They work best together. Start with a vocabulary set to learn the words, then practise a conversation topic on the same theme. Because the words are already familiar, your attention goes to sentence structure, which is exactly where it should go at that stage.
Teachers can use it the same way in class: a learnsheet on paper first, then the conversation topic on a laptop or tablet as a follow up.
What it costs
The first topic in every language is free, so you can see how it works before you pay anything. After that, a topic costs €3,29, a bundle of four related topics costs €8,29, and you can get all 40 topics for one language in a single bundle. You pay once and the topics stay in your account.
